When you have mods installed that have their own settings to tweak, Mod Configuration Menu provides a single menu that lets you access them all. Drag it into your New Vegas game folder and run it. This is a housekeeping fix that’ll let the game use more than 2GB of RAM. When you want to load the game MO2 should now show NVSE as the selected game to launch.

Download New Vegas Script Extender (NVSE) and drag and drop all the files (except the src and Data folders) into your New Vegas install directory. You can now use MO2 to download mods and load games with or without certain mod enabled, and re-order the load order to fix any incompatibilities. Anything in the download tab can be double-clicked and installed. In Settings > Nexus, you can connect your Nexus account to the program, a step that will make everything a lot easier. When it asks you, let it “associate with Nexus Links” so you can click on a mod on the download site and MO2 will grab it. Make sure you install it to a large drive, and when the game requests that you set up a new instance it’s best to move it from the default, which is on your C: drive, to somewhere that doesn’t host Windows. It’s a great tool to use for modding because it doesn’t change the game files, but instead creates a virtual folder for the mods to run from.

If desired, you can override LOOT's optimization to make manual tweaks to your load order yourself (this shouldn't be necessary for the mods in this list).
This program automatically reorganizes your load order to make it as stable as possible. A great tool to pair with your mod manager is the Load Order Optimization Tool, or LOOT. This will allow New Vegas to read and accept any texture mods you install (we'll get to those later). Then go to Settings > Workarounds > BSA Redirection and toggle it.
After installing it, log in, and select New Vegas as the game you're modding. I highly recommend Vortex since it has a great UI and is very easy to use. These tools automatically handle most mods' installation, so you don't have to dig around in-game files - simply drag-and-drop compressed mod files, and the mod manager will do the rest. The first thing you need is a Nexus Mods account, the website where most mods are posted. Thankfully, the process still isn't that time consuming or difficult. Since New Vegas is an old game with less-than-ideal stability and performance, preparing it for modding is a little more complicated than other Fallout and The Elder Scrolls games.
